OUR MISSION

Helping people break through barriers of poverty, homelessness and hunger through crisis management and transitional resources while instilling hope and dignity.

Our Vision

At the heart of our mission is an atmosphere of unconditional acceptance and respect for each individual. Within this environment, we work to nourish not just the body, but also the mind and spirit of those in our midst.

Our Story

The beginning

Deb Thackrah, a devoted runner and current Executive Director, stumbled upon an overlooked segment of the Greensburg community when she altered her usual running route one day. Venturing along a different trail, she encountered individuals sleeping outdoors, sheltered only by blankets or cardboard, with their meager belongings nearby. Witnessing this scene ignited a compelling urge within her to take action. This initial spark has since blossomed into Feeding the Spirit.

In 2011, Feeding the Spirit embarked on its mission with a dedicated board of directors and the initial objective of providing a free community meal each week. It was during this period that Feeding the Spirit (FTS) forged a partnership with Otterbein United Methodist Church. The church generously offered its dining and kitchen facilities to serve our guests. From the inaugural dinner held within the church, attendance steadily increased from 35 to an average of 100 individuals, including men, women, and families, each week. Everyone was warmly welcomed into an environment of compassion, where individual needs were addressed with care and sensitivity, devoid of judgment.

Where are we now

In the early months of 2020, the onset of the global COVID-19 Pandemic prompted widespread caution and adjustments across all spheres of life. This included our weekly meal distribution program at the Otterbein United Methodist Church in Greensburg, which underwent significant changes to adapt to the new circumstances. In response to the ongoing need for COVID-19 precautions, we transitioned to individually packaged meals distributed via a convenient drive-thru setup. We are immensely grateful to the Church for graciously allowing us to continue our weekly meal program, providing a vital service to the community during these uncertain times.

Despite the challenges brought about by these necessary adjustments, there is a silver lining to be found. With the implementation of the drive-thru service, we have been able to double the number of meals distributed every Thursday. Previously limited by the capacity of the church fellowship hall, which could only accommodate around 100 individuals, our expanded setup now allows us to serve an unlimited number of people in need. Meals are available for pickup between 5:00 PM and 6:00 PM, ensuring that our community members receive the nourishment and support they require during these challenging times.
